Lakewood Speaks in the News: Zoning Updates Drive Record Engagement
Since 2017, the City of Lakewood, Colorado has used Lakewood Speaks to collect public comment on public hearing matters. On average, the site receives dozens of comments each month, but when major or contentious issues come before Council, participation can surge into the hundreds.
Over the past year, Lakewood has been working on significant updates to its zoning regulations. The proposed changes—modernizing residential districts and updating parking requirements to help promote affordable housing—have drawn widespread public interest. After a year of engagement, the zoning code is now before City Council for final approval, with four public hearings scheduled between August and October.
At the August 25 City Council meeting, more than one hundred comments were submitted through Lakewood Speaks, the vast majority focused on the zoning proposal. The high volume of input underscores how accessible digital engagement tools make it easier for residents to have their voices heard.
Local news outlets have taken notice as well. Several stations covered the Council’s first hearing, and the local CBS affiliate even highlighted Lakewood Speaks during its broadcast—showing the platform in action and demonstrating how it connects community members with their government.
